This weekend Jake and I headed out to the Carsten Hösten exhibit at the Hamburger Bahnhof. I had heard about the exhibit on several blogs, so I was really curious to check it out. While the main "exhibit" was pretty cool, the rest of the museum's collections were pretty disappointing. I don't know... maybe it's because I actually was an art major, but whenever I see some current modern art installations, not only am I thinking, "sheesh - anyone can make that!" - I'm also thinking, "didn't that Joe guy in Professor Stellas class do that exact same thing in like, 1997?!?" And I don't mean that to sound like an art snob - quite the contrary actually, considering I went to art school in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. I guess the real question is, why was the Carsten Hösten exhibit considered so fascinating and groundbreaking, when you can get the practically the exact same experience at, say, the Livestock Pavilion at the Texas State Fair? I guess the thing that elevated it to art was the inclusion of the king size bed on a pedestal, and the Alice In Wonderland -esque mushroom sculptures.
Regardless, it was fun to get out of the neighborhood, and see the actual Hamburger Bahnhof museum space. As the name implies, it used to be an actual train station, so the architecture was pretty impressive.
Overall a very fun and low-key rainy weekend :)
